The WonderfulWorld of the African Grey
|

African Grey parrots are by far the most intelligent of all the parrot kingdom. They have capabilities
for large vocabularies, and on top of that they can use speech cognitively! They can be broken
down into two subspecies- Timnehs and Congos. Congos are the larger of the two with light
grey/silver bodies, a white area around the eye and a brilliant red, squared off tail. Timnehs - the
smaller subspecies are a darker grey/silver with the same white area around the eye and a deep
maroon colored, squared off tail. They also have a bone colored upper beak whereas the Congos
beaks are totally black.
It has been my experience that there is no difference in intelligence in either Grey, but Timneh's do
tend to be more willing to try new things and be less shy. This doesn't say that Congos are
neurotic as some claim, just that Congos are like the kids at the beach who dip their toes in the
water and slowly move their way in to the deep and Timnehs ball themselves up and go for the
cannonball!!

As the name implies, African Greys are from Africa.
They occupy the central part of Africa from the area
of the Ivory Coast into Kenya and Northern Angola
as well as the Congo and Tanzania. They pretty
much stick to the lowland forest areas, and can often
be found following elephant herds around in their
daily foraging for seeds, fruits, berries and nuts.
They also follow the elephants to get to the minerals
that pachyderms dig up with their feet when looking
for water.
Greys are ground feeders which may be one of the
contributing factors of their instinctual wariness of
things around them. When on the ground they are
more succeptible to predation. This may be
something carried over into our domestic
companians making them feel out situations before
taking part in them.
