Rescued Timnehs-
Trials & Tribulations
L-R- Jamokie with Leo Kincaid at the 2002 Bragfest, Jamokie,
Tracy with Jamokie at the Bragfest 2002

The First Timneh that graced our lives as a rescue was Jamokie. She was far from being
abused and only bordered on neglect. Her owner worked a very time consuming job and
had little time to spend with the birds. Bret and I drove to Oregon and picked up the
wonderful bundle of joy. Jamokie stole my heart and became another treasured member
of our family.
Jamokie was a VERY spoiled little girl. She was petite, tipping the scales at 270g with the
attitude of a 12 foot 100 pound bird! She preferred the company of people over other
birds, and would chase off any bird that comes near her or her humans. Her talking
ability consisted of sound effects , trills and whistles. She did a truck back up alarm
wonderfully!!
J.R. was the second Timneh we rescued and was in an awful condition when we got him. He had no tail,
no chest feathers, very few feathers on his back, and his wings (those that were there) were mutilated
something awful. He looked like he was on deaths door.
J.R. is over 20 years old, and was never taught to step up. He has an open band and it is our thought that
he is a wild caught. He is very hand shy due to being hit, slapped, grabbed and thrown. Anything
resembling a stick brought near him will throw him into a total frenzy.
We knew from the start that we were in for a challenge with J.R. and his rehabilitation. His background
contained abuse, neglect, poisoning (his cage contained a zinc coating having been painted with
Rustoleum) and bad nutrition.  Our first goal was to make him healthy. we put him in a new cage and used
HUGE metal cutters to destroy his old cage before bringing it to the dump. We wanted no one else to
ever use the cage so we took the extra precautions to make it un-usable. To change his diet from straight
sunflower and safflower seed would prove more difficult. Today we can proudly boast that he eats
Harrison's and enjoys an occasional sunflower. It was a long process to switch him over, but he looks SO
good now and is so wonderfully healthy!
When J.R. came to us we immediately put him under full spectrum lighting and offered fresh fruits,
vegetables and a variety of pellets to choose from; Harrisons, Roudybush and Zupreem were the main
choices. Spirulina, wheat grass and other healthful items were sprinkled, tasted and added to his diet.
After six months that J.R. came to us  I am pleased to announce that he is fully feathered!  He has a tail,
his chest is full and his wings are  look great!. He seems to feel so much better and takes more time to
preen as well. He had never had a bath before coming to us either, so I am sure that routine showers
contributed to his ability to care for his feathers as well.
