                                                     Adoption Requirements Contract Inclusions
Please initial every requirement after you have read and understood them. Your initials legally bind you to performing
requirements. Failure to initial or agree to requirements will result in inability to adopt, repossession of bird(s) and forfeit
of all donations and fees.
_____  1. No Breeding or hobby breeding at all- no exceptions
_____  2. You must fill out an application
_____  3. You must understand and perform all duties of all contracts signed or initialed including but not limited to the
Adoption Application, 10 things you need to know before adopting a bird, Adoption cover sheet, or other PPAR
documents signed or initialed as required by PPAR.
_____  4. Potential adopters must submit to in home inspections.
_____  5. Adopting families must allow post-adoption visits by a PPAR representative. This extends for the life of the
adopted parrot.
_____  6. There must be an obvious and clear relationship with the bird you wish to adopt. No bird will be adopted out
unless the bird has decided that it likes you. Patience will be a big asset when striking up a relationship with an older
bird that has had a less that perfect life.
_____  7. An in home adoption trial takes place before any adoption. Initial in home trial is 3 days and is extended for 7
more days for a total of 10 days.
_____  8. Preferences will be given to applicants who:
     Are over 25 years old
     Own a home
     Have a steady employment history
     Do not smoke
     Have 8 or more hours a day to interact with their companion
_____  9. Low income families must sign and comply with an additional contract which details PPAR’s Parrot Placement
Assistance program.
_____  10. You must not have had any animal taken from you by law enforcement or other animal welfare organization.
_____  11. You MUST live within reasonable driving distance of Spokane, WA. You are responsible for travel costs.
Reasonable distance is generally accepted as WA, OR, ID or MT.
_____  12. NO TEFLON or NON- Stick cookware containing PTFE may be used in the home. This includes George
Foreman Grills, self-cleaning ovens, etc. Teflon can kill a bird in just minutes.
_____  13. You MUST have an appropriate cage. Cages must be approved by PPAR for size and condition.
_____  14. A cage for trial time will be provided and must be returned at the end of the in home trial time specified in the
adoption cover sheet.
_____  15. Daily diet for your companion must be species appropriate. It should include pellets, fresh fruits, vegetables
and clean water. A suggested diet will accompany each bird.
_____  16. Regular veterinary visits are required for preventative care (minimum every 2 years) or in the event of
illness. Refusal to have your companion treated in the event of injury or illness will be considered gross neglect and will
result in immediate relinquish of adopted bird(s).
_____  17. In the event that you move, you must notify PPAR so we can update our records.
_____  18. In the event of owner illness or death, the bird is to be returned to PPAR. You may NOT sell or give away
adopted bird without written permission from a PPAR representative.
_____  19. No bird is to be used as a food source for human consumption, reptiles or other animals.
_____  20. No bird adopted is to be used for scientific, laboratory or experimental purposes.
_____  21. Appropriate toys must be provided at all times.
_____  22. Wings and nails and general grooming of bird must be performed regularly.
_____  23. In the event of breach of contract and legal measures must be taken, you are responsible for all lawyer and
court costs and may be fined in addition up to $1000.00.
_____  24. Parrots need to be microchipped or tattooed for permanent identification. Microchipping services will be
provided by PPAR and registration information will be associated with the rescue for the life of the bird. Birds under a
specific size cannot be microchipped and it will not be a requirement for birds deemed too small for the procedure.  
(microchipping is not currently available. You will be notified as soon as our chips arrive to schedule an appointment)
