| Who can adopt? Anyone may apply to adopt. You must not be a smoker, a breeder or have had animals taken from you by any law enforcement or animal welfare group. We do check backgrounds to be sure you have never had animals taken from you or have been convicted of an animal crime or crime against children. Other factors may play into our decision. We reserve the right to not adopt to any person. Do you ship birds? No, we will not ship birds. Period. Adopting families must be within driving distance. Driving distance typically includes the states of Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana. Some conditions apply. How much does it cost to adopt? Adoption fees do vary with each bird. Costs of travel, vet care, operating costs or other expenses are figured into each adoption. It can generally cost from $20.00 for small birds to $600.00 for a large bird. Some fees may differ. It will soon be a requirement for you to volunteer XX number of hours with the rescue before you will be allowed to adopt. Does a cage come with the bird I adopt? If the bird comes to us with a cage, it goes to you with a cage- no extra costs or charges. A bird that comes to us with a cage that is inappropriate will not have that cage go with it. We will properly dispose of the cage in order to insure the health and welfare of the bird. If you need a cage for your trial period with the bird, one will be provided if the rescue has one available to loan. Do you have a waiting list? Sometimes we do have a waiting list. The waiting period is usually from 2 weeks to 6 months, but waiting for a specific species to come in does not necessarily mean you get to adopt the first one that comes in. In-home trial visits are required to make sure the bird is compatible with you and your family. Can I get a male and female of the same species? Not typically. We do not allow or encourage breeding of any rescue birds. For this reason we will not place any birds with breeders either. If you have a bird already and want to adopt another from us, they may not be of the same sex. It will be up to the potential adopter to pay for sexing if it not already done/known. Where are you located? We do not have a facility, rather we run out of a network of foster homes and private homes. We will not give out the addresses of our foster homes or allow visits for safety reasons. If and when we are able to build a facility we will allow potential adopters or relinquishing parties to visit but will not be open for tours to the general public. We understand that this makes some people uncomfortable, but unfortunately some very unscrupulous people have caused us to take this stance. It is for the protection of the birds as well as our foster homes. You require $40.00 just to look at my application, why? In order to run efficiently, we have to cover costs. This includes coming to your home for an interview and inspection, performing a background check, checking your references, paperwork, etc. All monies are used for the rescues general operation costs. Once approved for adoption you will have that money deducted from your adoption fee. If you fail your background check or are not approved to adopt, the money is non-refundable. How do I make a donation? Donations are always welcomed and needed. Monetary donations may be made through Paypal or sent to PPAR PO box 1644 Airway Heights, WA 99001. We are always in need of cages, office supplies, food, toys, towels or linens, re-saleable items and more. Just call or email and ask!! Donations of property for building our facility would be our grandest wish. Do you need volunteers? ALWAYS! We are always looking for good people to foster, help with fundraising, writing grants, manning booths at events, performing office tasks, help with educational classes, cleaning cages, working with birds, clicker training birds, behavior modification, and more! Do you breed birds? Absolutely not! Our job is to find homes for birds that people have and are unable or unwilling to care for them anymore. Too many birds without homes are already out there. Just check out the many rescues that have formed to take care of these birds! So, you are against breeders? No. We support breeding for preservation of species. We are against unethical and cruel breeders. We also realize that there ARE some responsible breeders out there. We do NOT support backyard breeders or people who breed to excess and cause suffering of birds in their care. What vet do you use? Locally, we use Dr. Doris Sievers of Claws and Paws Mobile Veterinary Services. Depending on the nature of illness, injury or emergency or if we cannot contact Dr. Sievers, we will use the Post Falls pet emergency or we will travel to see Dr. Tracy Bennett or Dr. Onorati in Seattle area. WSU veterinary hospital is also a resource we utilize. Feel free to contact us for names of other local vets who see birds. Do you charge for me to surrender a bird? We do not charge or ask a fee for you to relinquish a bird. However, any donation made is appreciated. All birds are tested for disease? Incoming birds may be tested for Psittacosis as well as tested for Polyoma, Aspergillosis, PBFD or others as deemed warranted. All birds are quarantined as long as necessary determined by their history. We will not take in birds with diagnosed or visible illness. |
