This is Quervo; the rescued bird that everyone has a little bit of her in their heart. She had the help of MANY people from throughout the U.S. To rescue her (we called it a ransom) from a situation in a bad home.

A special thanks to all who helped and prayed that we got this sweet thing out of such a bad situation. She will be going to a home that we thoroughly interview and deem healthy for this girl. We will make sure she is on her way to recovery while this new home visits her and builds a rapport. Once we see her improve medically and some behaviorally, she can go to her new home who can continue any treatments while we continue monitoring her progress. A contract will be signed with the new family for Quervo's safety.

Purchased as a companion because she could talk and because she was an African
Grey, this little 2 year old girl went from bad to worse. Her original owner was a little
old lady who had her in a filthy cage. She would push away any advance of affection
from Quervo since she was afraid of her, and tried to force her to "behave" through
deprivation of interaction, food or light. Then the little old lady had to go into an
assisted living facility that would not allow pets. It seemed like the bird was getting a
break.
Now the bird was purchased by a young woman who had two very young children and a
husband who cowed to her every demand. She yelled a lot (we hear it all from Quervo
now) and punished her children with probably the same manner she did Quervo. She
hit the little grey whenever she bit, or looked like she was ready to bite. Most bird
owners know that a true bite draws blood, anything else is a communication -
basically. Well, Quervo tried to communicate and was hit for it. The lady was very
domineering and couldn't understand why the bird would not bend to her will, thus
more hitting was done to try to make the bird docile. (**Inhale...exhale...mumble...if
Ihavenothingnice tosay don'tsay anythingatall....***inhale...exhale***) When Quervo
would try to bite her when she had her food bowl filled, she was hit with the food crock.
Quervo also had no cage at this lady's home. Granted, I credit her throwing away the
bad cage, but she didn't get a replacement cage and kept Quervo on a stand in the
middle of the room and punished her whenever she flew off. The little grey had no
security or safe place to retreat to with screaming kids, a truly yap-yap dog and a
woman who thinks positive reinforcement means duct tape with a smile. There is plenty
more, but you get the idea of where she came from.
Quervo has plucked her chest and all around her neck, but you can only see how
extensive it truly is when you bathe her. She is still tearing at her chest, but we are
confidant we can direct her plucking into some other positive action.
.

UPDATE- Quervo is doing wonderfully! Feathers have grown in where before there were none. Quervo interacts well and loves her family!! It's great to hear all is well so many years after her stay here at the rescue
