Wingclipping, Nailtrimming,
and Bathing
Wing trimming is a personal choice. We, at the rescue, encourage owners to make the
decision to trim. It only takes a moment for a bird to fly out the door or a window.
Even people whose birds have never shown an inclination to fly before can easily spook
and take flight off of a shoulder. Once loose, a bird has only a few days to be
recovered, during which they can fall prey to cats, dogs or raptors, inclement weather,
starvation and dehydration. If you choose to trim your bird, be sure to use the correct
cut for each species. Not all wing trims are the same! Avoid using a "vanity" cut which
leaves the primary flights but cuts secondaries. A bird with primary flight feathers can
still fly.
Nail trimming is done only as often as a bird's talons need it. Some birds use a concrete
perch and keep their nails in good condition. Other birds have nails that seemingly grow
like weeds and need to be trimmed monthly or more! A good way to tell if your bird
needs a trim is to put them on a table or counter top. If the pads of your birds feet are
raised and held elevated by the nails, its time for a trim. If their foot lies flat with the
tips of the nails touching the surface they stand on, they do not need trimmed. Keeping
their nails in good condition can help prevent atrophy, injury or foot deformity.
Bathing is a VERY important part of caring
for an avian companion. In the wild birds
bathe regularly if not daily! Bathing not only
keeps the feathers clean, but it rids the body
of excess dander. Grooming each feather daily
is a lot of work, and bathing helps keep the
oils and skin hydration in balance.

Pampered Parrots will come to your home to trim wings, nails and
bathe your bird! The cost is $15.00 a visit.
