The adoption process is fairly simple. If you have an interest in adopting a parrot, do your research first as to what kind may work best with you and your lifestyle. When you contact us, you will first be asked to fill out an application. Return the application with the required fee. Application fees are used for food, cages, toys, operating costs, etc.. You do recover your fee with approval to adopt by having it deducted from your adoption fee. After we receive your application, it can take 2-4 weeks to process. We will first perform a background check- mostly looking for any animal abuse in your background. We will then call to schedule an in home visit. This initial visit is very important. If we notice possible harmful items in use, we can help point them out to avoid accidents farther down the road. We also make sure you know and understand the commitment required to adopt. We will ask a lot of questions and ask that you answer as honestly as you can. This helps lets us know what level of bird education you have and what more may be needed before you adopt. Your application and in home visit go to the board of directors next. They decide if you are approved or denied. PPAR does reserve the right to deny any application. Once approved, the bird you are interested in adopting comes to stay with you for a trial period. At this time you must give us your adoption fee, though it is returned if you choose to not adopt the bird at any time during the trial period. Usually a trial period is anywhere from three to seven days. We can provide a temporary cage for the trial period, and will often help you find a cage or direct you where one can be purchased after trial is over. After the home trial you are given the opportunity to adopt. Follow up can be one of the most important parts of an adoption. We stay in touch with you to address any questions or needs and to make sure the bird is thriving. Any sign of abuse, neglect, improper care of the bird, or not abiding by signed contracts will result in its immediate confiscation and forfeiture of any donation made. We will and do prosecute to the fullest extent of the law when and where applicable. We are not a store. We do not allow people to show up, pick a bird and go home. We want to be sure each bird is going to its forever home and take each step of the adoption process to be confident that bird and new owner are compatible. Many of the birds in the rescue have baggage. They may have previously been abused or neglected and may carry quirks and insecurities. With love, commitment and persistence, your new bird will settle in and you will reap the many rewards of companionship. |
