Squidge is often called Brat Boy in our house. We often joke
about his being a six foot bird trapped in a seven inch bird
body. He loves to hear people squeal, and will purposely chase
people just to illicit the desired response. Our friend Scott will
come over and Squidge will stalk him (no joke!) just to try to
make Scott jump. He will act very nonchalant when Scott talks
to him, but as soon as Scott turns his back, sits down or moves
somewhere else, he is fair game for a sneak attack! Squidge
then laughs his little digital laugh and scoots back to his play
area to start all over again!
Above and below : female red belly parrot Lupe'
|
Lupe' is an absolute sweetheart in our family.
She is petite. She is gentle. She is calm, polite and
clean. She gives kisses and will whisper sweet
nothings into your ear....................and then her
halo tips nd her devilish side slips through!!!
With a few sweeps of her head she will empty her
food dish of pellets so she can climb in it and pull
her green bell pepper in after her like a blanket.
She will screech louder than a conure to make sure
you know she is right ther--next to you--on your
shoulder--next to your ear--> right THERE! She
will play with you by becoming "so BIG" and then
"SO small" and then spin her head in miniscule
circles so fast all the while yelling "crazy bird crazy
bird CRAZY BIRD!" Phew! Wears me out just
thinking about it!
Poicephalus rufiventris rufiventris (nominate species) are from Africa ranging from central Ethiopia to southern Ethiopia and into northeastern Tanzania. The males have an orange belly, unlike the red the name suggests, with head, back, wings and tail a gray/green/olive/brown color. Under tail coverts are a neon blue/green intermixed with tinges of yellow. The female is basically the same except she does not sport the same orange breast. Instead, the blue/green color extends up her mid chest Both have the same capabilities for speech and sound like little digital computers when they do talk. Red bellieds can be found in Savannah and Acacia scrubland, especially frequenting areas that have Baobob trees. Living in pairs or small family groups they forage for grains, seeds and fruit to make up their diet.
Poicephalus rufiventris pallidus ranges in eastern Ethiopia and Somalia. There is still not enough proof of examples of the sub-nominate species in the wild to provide a satisfactory truth of existence, but it is still generally accepted as such in bird circles. The sub-species is generally described to be the same as above with the inor difference of a gray-brown head and a paler orange color on the chest.

There is never a dull
moment in the house
with the red bellieds
around. You can always
count on them for a kiss,
a smile, or some
down-and-out totally out-
rageous stunt that will
put your sides in
stitches and your face
on permanent grin
status. It's been our
family opinion that they
are the definite clowns
of the poicepahlus
family, and that they
have taught us that
small packages very
often DO come with
big surprises!
Kitty toys aren't just for kitties anymore!!!
